BORN AGAIN….a long time coming!

by Gregory Pecker on Monday, May 9, 2011 at 6:53pm

To me, the new DWARVES record has been a long time coming. I can only imagine how Dwarves fans, who have been waiting since MUST DIE, feel about a 7-year wait for a new record from their favorite band in the whole wide world. Now that it’s out, wasn’t it worth the wait?? As much as I, myself, am pleased as punch that this magnum opus has finally been released, I cannot stop thinking back to Spring 2008, when I first heard Blag speak the words “rehearse material for the new record.”

We had booked some time at the landmark Lennon Studios, in San Francisco, to rehearse for our upcoming tour of Spain and Portugal. We worked on “Stop Me,” “Best Band Ever,” and “Working Class Hole,” if my memory is correct. It was Wholly Smokkes, Chip Fracture, HeWho, Blag, and myself – a re-union of the 2000/Punk O Rama line-up that recorded “How To Win Friends And Influence People,” getting ready to destroy the Spanish DWARVES fans.

Almost a year passed, and by early 2009 we were recording basic tracks at Castle Studios in Eagle Rock, California, with the Fresh Prince of Darkness, Rex Everything, and Clint Torres back in the band as well.

Castle Studios is a heavily guarded, pink structure that sits upon a hilltop overlooking the neighborhood in which I grew up in. It also looked over the hotel in which Blag booked our rooms. Just a stroll down the boulevard took us to our hotel, the bank, Walgreens and a coffee shop called Swork, so we were set. At night, a taco truck rolled up on Colorado Blvd. and sold rad tacos until 3am, which saved us a drive to 7-11. One night I talked Blag into joining me for some carne asada, and since you will rarely see him eating Mexican food, it was all that much more enjoyable. What was hilarious was that Blag struck up a conversation with the taco vendor, regarding his choice of talk-radio… Rush Limbaugh, I think. Well, the guy got a little peeved at Blag’s sarcasm, ultimately refusing to sell him extra guacamole. Blag scorned the bilingual, Chicano taco vendor listening to right-wing radio as we walked away, reacting like Sheriff Beauford T. Justice meeting black Sheriff Branford -”what the HELL is the world comin’ to?” But I digress.

Our stay at Castle was long, but not so much for me, as I recorded 25 songs in two days, and not all of them were one-take-suzies. We recorded everything, and over time, we recorded with everyone. I mean we ALL contributed something, and it felt good, but something weird happened once the mix began. I was not there as much as Blag and The Fresh Prince, or Rex for that matter, but I did drive out from the desert from time to time. The last time I was there (several months later) I remember there being no chairs to sit in, and there were frustrated sighs from our engineer who had resorted to shooting a pistol at carefully placed targets in his backyard anytime there was tension. With bullets running low, and targets getting bigger by the mix, Blag became THE target. Feeling the vibe, he was already putting out feelers for a new mixing engineer, but did not find one before being squeezed out of one final meal of roasted chicken, falafels and pita bread from that yummy Armenian/Greek place in Glendale. Reeking of garlic paste and pickled beets, Blag hit the boards.

Punks in their bedrooms, Hollywood rockers in their dens, Top 10 producers surrounded by vintage analog mixers and Sonic Maximizers, all with a Pro Tools set-up. Blag saw them all, and heard their mixes, but did not find his sound until DWARVES honorary member Black/Latin Josh Freese introduced him to a multi-talented mixer by the name of Andy Carpenter. Andy falls into the “punk in the bedroom” category, from what I am told. Andy helped save the record, but nobody had to tell me that. With all credit going to Blag, of course..

It took about 3 years for THE DWARVES ARE BORN AGAIN to see it’s release, from that night at Lennon in SF, until today, and it was well worth the wait. I hope this sheds a little light as to why this record has been a long time coming.

To me…
